Inside the sun appears the letters "HIS" in with a cross intersecting the "H" from above and three nails below. Behind the shield, appears a design of two crossed keys with a cord threaded through the head of each of the keys. Above the shield is a mitre with a stole extending from it. The stole has a cross design and fringe on each end. Around this design appears the wording "FRANCISCUS PONTIFEX MAXIMUS". The sign appears in a single-lined circular carrier having a scalloped design forming a band inside the circle.
