Inside the emblem, a black human figure set against a white background holds a shield in one hand that is colored with alternating blue and white rings, with the center of the shield featuring a blue outline of the state of Michigan. In the other hand, the figure holds a yellow lightning bolt with the word "MERIT" written in black beneath the lightning bolt.
