The shield is a rectangular shape appearing in the center of the vertical key. The Greek letters BK (which translates to "PhBK," meaning "Phi Beta Kappa") appear in the center portion of the shield. There are three stars in the top left corner of the shield, with one star appearing above two other stars side-by-side below it. A hand with its index finger pointing to the three stars appears in the bottom right corner of the shield. The perimeter of the shield contains a wavy stamp edge-like design.
