Design Mark
The mark consists of a circular emblem with the words "Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University" appearing along inside the border of the circle. Inside the circle, is a crest divided into four sections. The top left corner depicts Knight in armor standing in a triumphant pose. The top right corner depicts a parchment, surveyor's compass, pen and hand. The bottom right corner depicts a stalk of corn. The bottom left corner depicts a scientific burner. On top of the crest, inside the circle, appears a lighted lantern with a hand hovering over it.
Translation
The Latin maxim "UT PROSIM" translates into English as "That I May Serve".
